BassFan Winning Pattern

Consistency was the name of Mike McClelland's game at the Harris Chain Bassmaster Elite Series. Pros who win tour-level events will often tell you that keeping an open mind was a critical component in their success. But a narrow-minded approach worked quite nicely for Mike McClelland at the recent Harris Chain Bassmaster Elite Series. Read More..

Will McClelland's One-Shot Deal Start A Trend?
It's a good thing Mike McClelland didn't sell the boat he ran last year on the Bassmaster Elite Series – having the extra Champion at his disposal allowed him to take advantage of a unique midseason sponsorship opportunity.

The Angler of the Year (AOY) leader from Arkansas will be sporting his regular Champion/Falcon Rods wrap during this week's event at Lake Wheeler. But when the circuit moves to Kentucky Lake the following week, both he and his boat will be decked out in the black and lime green colors of Tahoe Smokeless (tobacco).

The Tahoe deal is for one tournament only, and could open a new avenue for other anglers to secure short-term agreements – particularly with regionalized companies. Tahoe Smokeless has been on the market for less than a year, and its distribution is currently limited to less than a dozen states (primarily in the Southeast). Read More

McClelland Smokeless In Kentucky

Norman, Ok. – When the Bassmaster Elite Series makes its 8th stop of the season June 12-15 on Kentucky Lake, current AOY points leader, Mike McClelland, will be flying some new colors. In an Elite Series first, McClelland has teamed up with Tahoe Smokeless tobacco for a single event sponsorship.

During the Bluegrass Brawl, McClelland will fish out of the same Champion boat that he used during the 2007 Elite Series season featuring a new Tahoe Smokeless wrap in lime green and black. “This is basically like the same deal going on in NASCAR, where drivers change sponsorships for a single race. I think that this is a new, fresh look at what the possibilities are for professional anglers. There’s nothing to say that we can’t change our look over the course of the year.” McClelland told The BZ.

While Tahoe Smokeless will be his primary sponsor for the event, McClelland’s other key sponsors will still be represented in the wrap and jersey design. “The cool thing is that Tahoe is still allowing me to carry the Champion and Falcon logos on my boat.” McClelland said. “Tahoe Smokeless will be the primary sponsor for this event, but they are allowing the other sponsors to still play, so that’s really cool.”

Located in Virginia, Tahoe Smokeless’ primary distribution is in the South and South East. McClelland noted that, “Tahoe was looking at new marketing and promotional aspects and the President and CEO of the company is an avid bass fisherman. They feel that this is a good market to get involved in.”

The Bluegrass Brawl event could turn into “the battle of the smokeless,” as McClelland rooms with fellow Elite Series pro, Jeff Kreit, who is sponsored by Longhorn Smokeless tobacco. Read More

Mike McClelland is once again leading the Angler of the Year race. His narrow lead — 10 points — over fellow Elite Series angler and last week's AOY leader, Todd Faircloth, will hold for at least the next couple of weeks. There are no other tournaments until the Wheeler Lake, Ala., event, June 5-8.

Does he see it holding beyond that?

"I'm hopeful," he says. "There's still a lot of time left this year but it's at least possible as of now. I think the schedule will help me. I hope so anyway. But, you have to remember I was in first place after Amistad and then Todd (Faircloth) moved up. And, there are several other guys within striking distance, so things can change." Read More
